Elegant in its simplicity, timeless in its appeal, white on blue sashiko has been practiced since the Japanese Edo period. Originating as a means of mending and reinforcing peasant garments, it evolved to into decorative designs which were adopted by the middle classes. Today sashiko stitchers expand their sashiko stitching to include more colors and modern designs, but the classic designs endure. Sashiko is becoming very popular combined with other techniques on surface design projects. Although they look complex, sashiko designs are quick, easy, and inexpensive to complete. Because they need only thread and needle, they make excellent travel projects. Look in the side menu for Boro Stitching supplies.
