%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BPostage%20Due%20Stamps%0A%0A%0A%26nbsp%3BPostage%20Due%20stamps%20were%20authorized%20in%201879%20and%20were%20unique%2C%20since%20they%20were%20the%20first%20stamps%20issued%20which%20didn%26rsquo%3Bt%20prepay%20for%20the%20delivery%20of%20mail.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BInstead%2C%20they%20denoted%20the%20amount%20of%20postage%20due%20on%20mail%20that%20was%20insufficiently%20prepaid.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BThis%20amount%20was%20paid%20not%20by%20the%20sender%2C%20but%20rather%20by%20the%20recipient%20of%20the%20letter.%0ADesigned%20solely%20for%20functional%20purposes%2C%20the%20stamps%20were%20plain%20with%20large%20numerals%20indicating%20the%20amount%20to%20be%20paid.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BFor%20twenty-five%20years%2C%20this%20design%20remained%20unchanged%20%26ndash%3B%20although%20the%20colors%20varied%20from%20a%20brown%20to%20red%20brown%20to%20a%20deep%20red.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BThese%20first%20issues%20were%20printed%20by%20the%20American%20Bank%20Note%20Company%20and%20were%20released%20on%20July%201%2C%201879.%0A%26nbsp%3BIn%201894%2C%20the%20Bureau%20of%20Engraving%20and%20Printing%20took%20over%20the%20contract%20for%20producing%20the%20Postage%20Due%20stamps%2C%20and%20the%20design%20changed%20slightly.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BWhile%20the%20early%20issues%20featured%20the%20numeral%20in%20an%20oval%2C%20these%20new%20releases%20had%20the%20value%20figure%20in%20a%20diamond.%0A%26nbsp%3BIn%201930%2C%20the%20Bureau%20of%20Engraving%20and%20Printing%20changed%20the%20designs%20so%20that%20the%20numerals%20were%20featured%20in%20a%20half-circle.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BThe%20following%20year%2C%20in%201931%2C%20the%20Bureau%20of%20Engraving%20and%20Printing%20changed%20the%20format%20of%20some%20of%20the%20stamps%20slightly%20%26ndash%3B%20a%20horizontal%20format%20was%20used%20as%20opposed%20to%20the%20vertical%20one%20used%20previously.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BThe%20design%20remained%20the%20same%2C%20however.%0A%26nbsp%3BIn%201959%2C%20the%20Postage%20Due%20stamps%20were%20printed%20in%20two%20colors%20for%20the%20first%20time.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BThe%20designs%20of%20these%20issues%20were%20similar%20to%20the%201930-31%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BHowever%2C%20the%20border%20and%20background%20were%20printed%20in%20a%20carmine%20rose%2C%20while%20the%20numerals%20were%20printed%20in%20black.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BIn%20addition%20to%20the%20color%20change%2C%20new%20values%20were%20also%20used.%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BIn%201985%2C%20the%20Postage%20Due%20stamps%20were%20discontinued%20by%20the%20Postal%20Service%20and%20are%20now%20obsolete.
