President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a fanatical philatelist whose first year in office no doubt inspired many others to take interest in the hobby of stamp collecting. As an avid stamp collector, FDR took great interest in new designs and would often suggest topics or subjects for new U.S. postage while serving as President. When requests were made to issue a series that featured famous Americans, FDR happily participated, himself selecting many of the honorees. In all, 35 stamps were issued; five Americans were selected for each of seven categories honoring authors, poets, educators, scientists, composers, artists and inventors. More than 80 years have passed since the Famous Americans stamps were introduced, but it still remains one of the most popular collectible series to this day. Complete, never hinged 35-stamp collection.
