Scientific Name: Commiphora myrrha
Botany: Myrrh belongs to the Burseráceas family. It is a tree with thorns on the branches that reaches a maximum height of 3 meters, it can withstand extreme climatic conditions, such as desert regions. Its flowers are orange-red in color and the bark on the trunk is smooth, usually ash or slightly grayish white, and produces the coveted and legendary myrrh resin.
Origin and History: Native to North Africa and the Middle East, particularly Somalia, Ethiopia, Arabia, and Yemen, it was very popular in ancient cultures. The Chinese valued it as a medicine, while the Egyptians used it to embalm their pharaohs, just as they used it in their sun worship rituals. Myrrh essential oil is already mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, the Ebers Papyrus (which is from the 16th century BC), an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes. The Arabs used myrrh to treat many skin conditions such as chapped skin and wrinkles. It was included in Hildegard's Medicine, a compilation of the first highly regarded German medicines by the Benedictine herbalist Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). It has also been used since ancient times in religious and healing ceremonies.
