The Chinle mudstones are among the most colorful of geological strata. Here they show off shades of red, purple, yellow, green and even blue. The Chinle is a very widespread layer, found in Petrified Forest, Painted Desert, Canyonlands and here in Arizona near the Utah border. In some places it contains petrified wood.
