Yarns, yarns, yarns…. So many yarns to choose from for a weaving project! Which ones will help your next project be everything you envision? In this class we’ll look at readily available weaving yarns and the types of projects that each are best for. We’ll also deal with the technicalities of how they are sized and how to estimate a good sett for your chosen yarns. And we’ll answer lots of other questions: What combinations work well? Does the weave structure matter? How do weaving and knitting yarns differ? Join us as we unravel some of the secrets of selecting just the right yarns for your next weaving project. Students can expect to: Be able to handle a variety of cotton, linen, rayon, silk and wool weaving yarns to gain more familiarity with their characteristics. Learn sizing terminology for weaving yarns Understand the variables of sett and practice estimating the sett for a given yarn and structure Learn the differences between weaving yarns and knitting yarns and how best to use knitting yarns in weaving projects Discuss when and how to combine different yarns Practice identifying unknown yarns and determining their size (those tag sale bargains!) Deepen their understanding of the interplay between yarns, woven structure, and the finished hand or drape of the fabric
