Feathers from various birds have been used by tribal peoples around the world for ritual, ceremonies, clearings and decoration. Tribal peoples believed that the Spirit of each bird remained in the feathers and could be called upon to assist one in their spiritual journey. Feather Fans are also used for smudging, the art of fanning any person, animal or space with the feather fan and burning herbs such as sage or sweetgrass to remove negative energy and return to purity, healing and wholeness. Each feather fan is individually decorated in a ceremonial way.
Feathers used are from live domesticate birds or feathers collected along the beaches and trails of Alaska.
