Priced and sold by 1oz or 2oz. Dried, flaked Alkanna tinctoria root. Alkanna tinctoria also known as dyer's alkanet is an herb in the borage family. The root is used as a dye and produces a red/purple dye, grays and lavenders. It has been used in the Mediterranean region since antiquity. Alkannin is soluble in alcohol, ether, vodka or oil, but is insoluble in water. These root chips will need to be soaked in alcohol to extract the color before being added to the dye pot. Alkanet is moderately lightfast. It is often used as a colorant for cosmetics and soaps. In a more acidic dye bath, the color will be more red/crimson, and in a more alkaline dye bath, the color will shift to more blue/purple. I find it gives a smoky grayish purple in the first dye bath, and after that the exhaust baths are mostly gray. I will include an information sheet on dyeing with Alkanet. I ship all my products as quickly as possible.
