On the night of January 18, Jayapraksh was stocking the cooler that ran along the back wall of his Pic-Kwik store. He heard the buzzer ring announcing the arrival of a customer and stepped around the corner, when a man punched him in the face. Instinctively, he punched back and the impact knocked his assailant to the floor. Within seconds, three other men ran to the back of the store. They had bandanas tied around their faces so all Jayapraksh could see were their angry eyes. One of them pressed a gun against hisnose, flattening it against his cheek. "Do you want to die? Do you want to die?" the man shouted. Jayapraksh's world shrunk to the circumference of the barrel on that gun. It looked like a big weapon, like the ones movie gangsters use to kill. In realityit was a pellet gun, capable of lodging a bullet in the brain or shooting out an eye. He felt one of the men trying to kick his leg out from under him, until he fell to the ground.
