Flamingos are tall, pink or reddish wading birds with thick downturned bills. They have slender legs, long, graceful necks, large wings, and short tails. The pink and reddish colors of their feathers come from eating carotenoid pigments found in algae and invertebrates. These are the feathers of a Chilean Flamingo photographed at the San Francisco Zoo. Their name,‘flamingo’, comes from the Latin and Spanish for ‘fire’ referring of course to their bright pink feathers.
