Zebra mussels found in popular fish tank accessory, Missouri

The Missouri Department of Conservationis warning aquarium owners that a popular algae product can harbor zebra mussels. The invasive mussels have been found in moss balls, including some sold in Missouri. Moss balls are made up of filamentous algae called marimo. Conservation officials are not sure how zebra mussels found their way into the moss balls. They are concerned that when aquarium water is emptied, zebra mussel larvae could be introduced to other bodies of water.
